Total Lunar Eclipse on 20-21 Feb 2008

4 March 2007 Lunar Eclipse By Robin Lee
Sequence photo I made for the 4 March 2007 total lunar eclipse

The lunar eclipse starts at 0100 until 0152 UT on 21 Feb 2008 (2200 EST or 1900 PST on 20 Feb 2008). The totality will last for 52 minutes. We’ll have partial lunar eclipse this coming 16 August and 31 December 2009. Americans will have a total eclipse again on 20-21 December 2010. Yet to check for us.

*Americans have 3 total eclipses in less than a year and we had 2 as we’re not favoured this time.

Chang’e-1’s First Release by China

This is a bit late but late is always better than none. :D

Chang’e-1 was launched on 24 Oct 2007 at Xi Chang Satellite Launch Site. It’s China’s first lunar orbiter. Following Japan’s Kaguya (Goddess of Moon in Japanese), Chang’e-1 is the second lunar orbiter owned by Asia countries. By the way, Russia is planning on a robotic lunar mission in 2009.

Lunar Occultations of Venus

Do you see that Venus is so close to the crescent moon? Will they be very close until they “collide”? Yes, they definitely will but just not colliding. It’s occultation. It happened on 1448 UT at 18 June 2007. The moon occulted Venus for not less than 4 hours (roughly figure). Have you seen it?

Blue Moon Isn’t Blue

Some might believe that the colour of Blue Moon is blue. However, this is not true. Blue Moon is refered to a second full moon in the same month. That’s all. Nothing special about Blue Moon but it is still worth the effort to monitor as moon is always interesting.

Tonight, there is a Blue Moon. If I am not mistaken, another Blue Moon will only occur until Dec 2009.

Egg Moon Tonight?

According to the folklore (traditional belief or legend), the Moon tonight looks like an egg. Have you noticed it? For me, it’s still an egg yolk. I am still observing. :-?

[Updated]
I think I know why it is called an egg by the folklore. The glare of the Moon was so bright that you can see it. If I am not mistaken, it’s the glare that confused us to figure out that the Moon was oval.
