Chang'e-1 First Image
Chang’e-1’s First Release by China

This is a bit late but late is always better than none. :D

Chang’e-1 was launched on 24 Oct 2007 at Xi Chang Satellite Launch Site. It’s China’s first lunar orbiter. Following Japan’s Kaguya (Goddess of Moon in Japanese), Chang’e-1 is the second lunar orbiter owned by Asia countries. By the way, Russia is planning on a robotic lunar mission in 2009.

The image above is the first lunar photo released by China National Space Administration (CNSA). The image was captured by the onboard CCD camera at the altitude of 200km. It’s a mosaic of 19 images of which total width and height are 280km and 460km. The resolution is 120m/pixel. The mosaic covers the area of longtitude 83E to 57E, latitude 70S to 54S.

Some people doubt that this photo is copied and edited using NASA’s lunar mission photo. However, by comparing the 2 photos, the Chang’e-1’s has one more crater in the bigger crater in the center of the image. Theoretically, this can prove that Chang’e-1’s photo is newer as the moon is always impacted by meteoroid.
