The annual meteor shower Orionid is coming again. The meteors are the debris of the extremely famous Halley’s Comet. The peak rate this year is around 20-50 per hour. Observers last year spotted the same figure and I guess we will get roughly the same again.
Where to look?
Just look at the direction shown at the left sky map. The best time to enjoy meteor shower is always before dawn. The radiant point of Orionid is between Gemini and Orion. You’ll get higher chance to spot it by looking there.
If you look at the file name of the sky map, it happens exactly at the same date last year as this is an annual meteor shower. Every year, the earth will pass through the orbit of the comet Halley, so we get the chance to see the debris left plunge into our lovely atmosphere (not so lovely these days) every year.
Don’t forget to catch them! Even though I have examinations since this Monday to next Wednesday, I will be ready for them. You don’t have to wait until the peak date to watch, start today! There are people reporting positive results.
Last important thing, Orion will be at the zenith before dawn! For your information, zenith is on our head and the best part of sky for astronomy.
