3 Meteor Showers In A Row

It’s the Perseids and Aurigids (this time, it’s amazing!) as well as Delta Aquarids which force me to take a break from my revision for this examination week to blog now.

Perseid meteor shower is going to peak on 12-13 August 2007. Some people have already reported that they saw some bright Perseid fireball down to magnitude -5. It’s as bright as a full moon! By the way, before that time, you can still spot some Delta Aquarids from Aquarius (the meteor shower is named after its radiant point).

According to The University of Western Ontario which operates a 17-38MHz meteor orbit radar, Delta Aquarid meteor shower was more active than Perseid meteor shower on 8 August and slowly Perseid will override it.

Aurigid meteor shower is predicted as a meteor storm. It peaks on 1136 UT8 1 September 2007. Its peak rate is not less than 100 meteors/hour as predicted by Peter Jenniskens of the SETI Institute and Jeremie Vaubaillon of Caltech. However, some of their optimist colleagues said that it can be over 300 meteors/hour! So, guys, watch out for this meteor shower, the sky is going to be scenetic!

  • Paul,

Wow, I haven't had any luck to go camping at countryside. The unpolluted sky there must be starry. Yup, if possible, try to declare it to your friends who received the email. I have to do this every year. :x
  • Thanks Robin,

Going camping to the countryside where there is no light pollution to look at the stars, perhaps I won't be dissapointed now, thanks for the info re the mars hoax, i'll pass this back. Cheers

    Paul
  • Hi Paul, thank you for your visit!

Mars is never going to be as close as Moon to us as its orbit doesn't have any collision with our orbit to make it closer than it does at this moment. The news that what you heard is commonly known as Mars Hoax. This hoax normally comes into your mailbox from August to October.

I quite like your arts! How about going further to be an astroartist?
  • Hi great site,

    Question?

Do you know anything about the events of 27th August 2007, apparantly mars is gonna be as close to the earth as it gets. So i've heard with the naked eye it will look real big???? is this true?

Check out my blog, its an art blog, look at the label LUNAR and ASTRONOMICAL

    Cheers. Paul. Yorkshire England.
