Light pollution scaleLight pollution, we hate it but some of us have to live with it especially those who live in suburban and urban areas. If you want to know how severe it is, try to look at the photos above. These are for those who live in South-East Asia and Malaysia, you may refer to The night sky in the World for yours.

To know more about the scale on the left, please visit John Bortle’s Light Pollution Scale.

I previously said that the light pollution in Kluang is affecting my observing but the image tells me that the pollution is totally near to zero. I shall say that the road lamp and my neighbours’ lamps are affecting me instead of the previous thought.

Hi, I work on environmental issues and I'm currently researching the effects of light pollution on the ecology and human health in Malaysia.

As the subject of light pollution is relatively new here and its environmental effects virtually unknown, there isn't much information available to go on with.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has information to share with me.

    Please email me at croniq@gmail.com

  • Hi Ravi, may I know what institute are you belong to? I'm interested to know more about your research, so please keep me updated :)

I have read that quite a number of animals need a very dark environment so that they could sleep well. The growing light pollution has forced them to look for darker place. Therefore, this maybe one of the reason that why we don't see tiger so often. Light pollution maybe one of the factor that causes the extinction of several animals.

Sky & Telescope has an article about the effects of the lights and glasses of tall buildings on the birds. A lot of birds (millions) are dead as they are fooled by the reflections by the glasses.
